Kleinwood MUD
Evaluation of Local Flooding & Design of Storm Sewer Relief Improvements

Jones & Carter, Inc.'s Hydraulics & Hydrology department stays true to our company motto of Smart Engineering and Smart Solutions™ with the innovative and cost effective solutions we work into even the most challenging drainage issues. This project provided no exception. The evaluation identified storm sewer limitations, as well as a previous improper overland flow design that created several flooding problems in the Kleinwood MUD subdivision. The natural topography of the area caused a much larger area to flow to the storm sewer inlets than they were designed to handle. The report that we submitted evaluated multiple options to alleviate the flooding problems ranging from increased storm sewer capacity using larger pipes to the use of swales and sheet flow corridors. The most desirable and cost effective option found was a storm sewer detention relief basin (shown on left). The basin serves not only for stormwater, but provides a pocket park for the resident with a walking trail.
