Bagby Street Improvement Project
Our team is working alongside the DRA/TIRZ No. 3 to lead the final design effort for the complete reconstruction of Bagby Street from I-45 to Franklin Street. Bagby Street is a major thoroughfare on the far west side of Downtown Houston near Interstate 45. It is a popular corridor for pedestrians with many local attractions including Sam Houston Park, Tranquility Park, the Hobby City and Houston City Hall. With such a large volume of pedestrians in the area, the Downtown Redevelopment Authority (DRA)/ TIRZ No. 3 developed an improvement project that focuses on the safety of those on foot and behind the wheel.
Jones|Carter worked with the local TRIZ, the Upper Kirby Management District and the City of Houston to address drainage and mobility issues in the area. Our portion of the project involved reconstructing the roadways from Richmond Avenue to Highway 59 into three lanes in both directions. We also added new curbed medians and left turn bays and realigned sidewalks. In addition, the Hydrology and Hydraulics team at J|C up-sized the area’s storm sewer laterals and storm sewer system.
Hardy Yards is a 50-acre mixed-use, transit oriented development north of Downtown Houston. Our team discovered a cost-effective alternative to creating a gateway from downtown to the development – which involved shortening the N. Main tunnel and creating an at-grade intersection. We also planned, designed and constructed pedestrian improvements, including widened sidewalks, safe crossing conditions, connections to METRO’s intermodal transit center, lighting and landscape buffering.
