TxDOT Campus Consolidation
Services: Design, Civil Engineering, Hydrology & Hydraulics, Traffic, Water Re-Use, Utility Realignment, Sidewalk and Pavement Design
Location: Austin, Texas
Jones|Carter was selected by The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide site development services for the consolidation of its Austin-area campuses into one master campus. The project is located at the intersection of Burleson Road and East Stassney Lane south of Highway 71 between Highway 183 and Interstate 35. The nearly 49-acre tract is currently undeveloped and heavily wooded.
The overall scale and size of the project required many elements of civil design, which J|C was able to provide to TxDOT. The new campus will feature four main elements: a 424,000+ square foot (SF) office building, a 171,000+ SF warehouse, a 67,000+ SF construction materials testing laboratory, as well as a 1,800 vehicle capacity parking garage.
When working through design concepts, special attention was paid to minimizing the development’s impact on the natural landscape. Through a strong teaming relationship with the architect, Marmon Mok, the J|C team has been able to reduce the footprint to primary infrastructure such as roadways, wastewater service, and utilities. Additionally, several elements of a low impact development (LID) are being incorporated such as rainwater collection systems on the roof, rain gardens, water quality best management practices, and detention ponds.
In order to tie this new development into the surrounding City infrastructure, J|C is designing an extension of a wastewater main, which will be completed in three phases. The team is also providing drainage services that will, once complete, mimic pre-development conditions by providing detention in line with the creeks onsite. The J|C team is also providing site grading, sidewalk and pavement design, dry utility relocation coordination, water quality, re-use water line design, and domestic and fire services.
